crime and ASB created by means of road, street related matters is significant in Tower Hamlets.
Road safety includes a variety of issues
- private road vehicles
- public transport
- cycling
- pedestrians
Road safety measures include
- bollards
- speed limits
- speed bumps
- Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN)
- Parklets
Whatever measure is being taken, there is always someone who breaks the rules and endangers others by any means of travel.
The Oaklands School head teacher is very keen on the Old Bethnal Green LTN whilst others think it increases problems in the area.

Floating bus stops for example were installed to increase the safety for cyclists. Disabled and other public transport users argue that floating bus stops increase their risk.
https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.jsWARNING We've been filming the chaotic & downright dangerous situation at the Westminster Bridge floating bus stop at St Thomas' hospital. Clip includes a speeding cyclist crashing into an elderly person. These designs are not safe & they need to be urgently halted @Mark_J_Harper pic.twitter.com/MrScNnWLs7

Interestingly when I asked AI to design a floating bus stop with cycle lane, the cycle lane was between the bus stop and the road, whilst the current floating bus stop design is between the bus stop and the pavement. (see title image AI created)
Tower Hamlets has the worst statistic for traffic related ASB as we have suffered a lot of car flips and street racing, especially underneath Canary Wharf and straight roads like the A12.
There are many arguments for and against but the amount of traffic related crime is the issue here.
Bollards are often erected to stop terrorist related injuries as they were caused on London Bridge, whilst bollards are seen as restriction by others.
Cycles have become a tremendous problem when they are left on pavements or even in roads and are difficult to navigate and obstruct.

To believe this is ok is so wrong …. Cars or bikes should not be blocking pavements.
We currently have a big problem with lobby members supporting increased dockless bikes being used and left unattended like this.

All these issues require regulatory involvement of local authorities.
