2025 – For a Better Future
This Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex. It also marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide in Bosnia.
Six candles lit in memory of the six million people in the Nazi Holocaust, who perished as a result of human action.
A seventh candle was lit in memory of all others who died under the Nazis and those who have perished through subsequent genocides and acts of hatred.
We all said:
- We light these candles in memory of all splintered families and lost communities
- we light these candles in memory of smashed lives and destroyed ambitions
- we light these candles in memory of bewildered, frightened and orphaned children
- we light these candles in memory of those whose last act was a selfless one
- we light these candles in memory of those who lived and died in the service of God and of their neighbour.

We must adhere to the law as it is and not as we want it to be”
Several of the speakers mentioned how important the combating of Hate Crime is and we invite you to sign the pledge on the Tower Hamlets website.
In December 2008, the Tower Hamlets Council launched the Tower Hamlets No Place for Hate Campaign Pledge which allows the community, community organisations and small local businesses the opportunity to make public condemnation of all forms of hatred.

The whole Tower Hamlets Community came together. Other speakers were

Two Catholic representatives, Sister Christine Frost MBE and Fr Andreas Blum.
Sister Frost explained the story of a Holocaust survivor, born in a Nazi camp to her mother weighing only 5 stone.
Fr Blum spoke about Rudolf Hess living next to Auschwitz with family, five children, whilst millions were murdered behind the wall of the Concentration camp. Film Zone of interest.
