To make you aware that currently there are a few fake news stories available attempting to drive political or police or other hate.
Stories from other countries pretending to happen in Britain, edited footage telling a different story and presenting a different truth.
Police and reliable media are doing their best to dispel myths and avoid large-scale misinformation, which can lead to unrest. Hate against immigration is a big driver of political agitation and we must be careful not to be drawn into this.
Today’s (29/8/25) Bloomer is a story from the Netherlands pretending to happen in the UK.
There are a few fake news messages online driving political hate. Be careful what you wish for or belief. Here is one example.

other cases include fake police violence, distorted police arrests news etc.
Fake story
Story across the platforms, here Facebook, distorting the arrest of a teenager as police brutality. This story was posted across all social media platforms.

What actually happened:
West Midlands Police then published a newsflash to put the public right and tell us the real reason for the arrest of that teenager.
….. The offence being investigated is one of malicious communications – sending indecent or grossly offensive communication to cause distress or anxiety……
Other recent famous fake news stories

Footage filmed at incidents gets edited to show one party involved committing an act, that is taken out of context.
Police have now taken to publishing counter stories to calm the public and publish actual scenarios.
The dilemma police face is keeping information confidential as not to jeopardise court action. Here is the original statement from Manchester Police from 2024

Two individuals involved in a fight at the airport were charged and later convicted for their behaviour.

Statistical truths
Today’s news shows a confrontational views taken by political factions about crime statistics.
Another big contender for take news are statistical depictions of crime and reduction of crime, being spread by various political factions. See our Statistics post, which is up-dated and shows how stats are represented by different parties.
Whilst there often is a truth to the presentation of statistics, the time-frame is often key to relating crime to being less or more in relationship to previous situations.
For example, when we had a spike in crime going up, any further reductions are being hailed as big progress by Police and politicians alike. whilst the level of crime might be much higher than it was 10 years ago in comparison.

crime statistics from 2012 to 2022 in Tower Hamlets, this was the old recording system prior to the layout and presentation being changed.

How crime is counted has also changed. See details.
