Make a difference in your locality. No need to pledge looking after certain areas. All you can do is as much as you can in the time you have available. That’s all I ask of you.
Advise about working with people
What puts people off from being coordinator the most is
- the time and effort and responsibility for a whole area of people with different needs and understanding of technology
- becoming vulnerable to being approached from people that are not known to a coordinator
Your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team will love to work with you and your local friends, who are without any doubt all very keen to keep their area crime and ASB free.
Always refer people who ask for help to your local Safer Neighbourhoods Team and note that advise is available online. You are by no means obliged to care for people who have problems.
What we all can do
Depending on your time available you can
- check bushes, growth, garden areas, any potential hiding places for dangerous items. If you find any, take a photo and
- if it’s a knife, gun or drugs do not touch, call 999
- other items take picture and send to @metcc or call 101
- await instructions on what to do. You may have to wait with the item.
- volunteer
- Areas with litter picks are less likely to be used by criminals for storing illegal items.
- Taking notes
- Those pesky ASB type things, you can write them down and note them. We have a sheet for that. When you have information pass this on to police.
- Report
- emergencies 999
- not urgent 101 or @metCC or report online
- Crimestoppers for anonymous reporting
I went on Safety Walkabouts with the Council to find that it would be a travesty to put up a Watch signs in areas strewn with litter and uncollected waste, as it is almost common place in this Council area. As added problem we have Lime Bikes all over the place. This borough becomes increasingly disorganised.
