5. May 2026 arson on former Synagogue in Nelson Street

The building at 40 Nelson Street, London E1 2DE (Whitechapel, Tower Hamlets), was the East London Central Synagogue (also known as Nelson Street Synagogue or Nelson Street Sfardish Synagogue).
It was a historic Orthodox Jewish synagogue founded in 1923, serving the Jewish East End community. It was one of the last purpose-built synagogues in the area and closed around 2020 due to structural issues (e.g., roof leaks and ceiling collapse), declining congregation, and maintenance costs. It was owned by the Federation of Synagogues and put up for auction in early 2026 with a guide price over £2 million.
Current Status (as of mid-2026)
The property was sold prior to auction to the Ashaadibi community (a local Muslim group based in Whitechapel/Tower Hamlets). They paid a £235,000 deposit and have signed the contract. They are actively fundraising the balance (target around £2.2 million for purchase + £1.1 million for renovations, total project ~£3.5 million) to fully secure and convert it.
Planned use: Convert into a Masjid (mosque), community hub/centre, madrasah (education centre), and youth hub under one roof for the Ashaadibi community. They describe it as reviving the space for worship, learning, and community service after years of disuse.
• Recent updates from their channels (Instagram, website, etc., around April 2026) indicate they view the purchase as secured and are focusing on completion and renovation. It is not yet fully operational as a mosque but is in transition.
This reflects the demographic shift in the East End from a historic Jewish area to a diverse, majority-Muslim neighborhood today. The sale was legal and private, avoiding public auction.
For the latest details, check Ashaadibi’s site (ashaadibi.co.uk) or local property records, as fundraising and works are ongoing.

Two men have indicated not guilty pleas over an alleged arson attack at a former synagogue in east London.

Dominic Charles-Turner, 31, and Moses Edwards, 45, are charged with arson with intent to endanger life at the building in Nelson Street, Whitechapel.

The court heard there were two explosions at about 05:00 BST on 5 May, followed by a fire at the entrance and gates of the synagogue, which had been closed since 2020 but still displayed Jewish symbols.

Turner and Edwards, both of east London, appeared at the Old Bailey for a preliminary hearing. Barristers for both defendants indicated they would deny the charge against them. A plea hearing was set for 18 September.

Fire crews were called to the scene shortly after the initial explosions. Six wine bottles were recovered, two badly damaged by fire and some later found to contain petrol accelerant, the court was told.

At the time of the fire, the former synagogue was in the process of being bought by a Muslim community group with plans to convert it to a mosque and community centre.

A provisional trial date was set for 28 April 2027. source BBC
