The Home Office Summer Surrender Campaign 2026 is a nationwide initiative encouraging the safe and anonymous surrender of knives and offensive weapons, continuing the model established in previous years.
Campaign Overview
The 2026 campaign ran throughout July and actions are still in place for August, see link, following the precedent set in 2025, with the goal of reducing knife crime and removing dangerous weapons from communities. The initiative is part of the Home Office’s broader Plan for Change, aiming to halve knife crime within a decade and improve public safety through community engagement and accessible surrender options
The scheme aims to reduce the number of knives and bladed articles in London by providing members of the public with safe and anonymous opportunities to surrender weapons without fear of prosecution.
As part of the campaign, an amnesty knife surrender van will be deployed in Hackney and Tower Hamlets on Wednesday 12th August.

Please be aware that unlike previous schemes, there is no compensation programme in place this year.
I am very happy that we finally have six knife bins in the borough, when a few years ago, we did have none.
I have strongly argued for knife bins and it seems they have a positive impact.
The knife bins are listed per address on the Council’s website with the locations, I link and also repeat. They are also on a knife bin provider website.
According to the council website, at the time of publication, already 917 weapons had been taken off the streets, which is very welcome.
Knife crime has increase and is very worrying for many people. I ask all parents and friends to speak to children, that knives are not protection but are more likely to increase the risk to people who carry them.

According to the enclosed poster the knife bins are

- St. Mary and St. Michael Church E1
- Byng Street E14.
According to the poster from Met Police it is legally permissible to take a well-wrapped knife to a knife bin and deposit it there, if you use enough cardboard and tape so that the knife doesn’t poke through the wrapping.
